Terms of Use
Last updated: 11 October 2026
In short
- Opinable is free. Post light opinions and let other people try to change your mind.
- Disagree with the idea, never attack the person. Strong words about a thing are fine; insults to people are not.
- Light topics only: no politics, wars, tragedies or other highly sensitive subjects.
- Your published takes, replies, contests and rebuttals are public and are automatically translated for readers in other languages.
- Your texts stay yours; you let Opinable show and translate them.
- Every text is checked before it's published. A text that's blocked never uses up your turn.
- Anyone can report content that breaks the rules; a person reviews it and may remove it.
1. About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and João Carvalho (an individual based in Portugal), who runs Opinable ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the Opinable app, you accept them. If you don't agree, please don't use Opinable.
How we handle personal data is explained in the Privacy Policy.
2. Your account
- You can read Opinable without an account. To post, reply, contest, award seals or report, you need one.
- You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
- Give accurate sign-in details and keep your password safe. You're responsible for what's done with your account.
- One account per person. Don't create accounts to get around a limit, a pause or a suspension.
- You choose your username once and can't change it later. It must not impersonate someone else or be offensive.
3. How Opinable works
- Takes: a take is a short opinion (up to 180 characters) in one category. You can post one take a day; the day resets at midnight in your time zone. During the launch period you may post more (the app shows how many and until when); after that date the usual limit applies again. A take that moderation blocks doesn't count toward the limit; a take held for a person to review counts until it's decided, and gives the take back if it's blocked.
- One Shot: each person can reply once to each take (up to 500 characters). You can't reply to your own take. A published reply can't be edited.
- Contest and rebuttal: the take's author may contest each reply once, and the person who replied may answer with one rebuttal before a deadline (currently 7 days from when the contest is published). Then the exchange ends. If no rebuttal arrives in time, the contest stays visible, marked "No rebuttal".
- Seals: only the take's author can award Good Point and Changed My Mind to replies on their take, at any time. A take can have at most one Changed My Mind, which is pinned at the top of the take. Seals can't be taken back by the author. The seals a person's replies receive make up their reputation.
- Limits on posting: replies, contests and rebuttals have no daily limit, only short anti-spam limits. After three blocked takes within 24 hours, posting new takes is paused for 30 minutes.
We may adjust these numbers (for example the rebuttal deadline or the daily take limit). The app always shows the ones in force.
4. Your content and licence
"Your content" is what you post on Opinable: takes, replies, contests, rebuttals, and the notes you add to reports. Takes, replies, contests and rebuttals are public once published; report notes are never published, only our moderators read them. Seals you award are your judgement, and are shown publicly.
You keep ownership of your content. By posting it, you:
- confirm that it's your own and that you have the right to post it;
- give us a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to host, store, reproduce, display, translate into other languages, and distribute it, in order to run, show and promote Opinable. This includes showing your takes in the feed and as "take of the day", and showing automatic translations of your texts to readers in other languages. We may let our service providers use it only to help us run Opinable.
The licence ends when you delete your content or your account. When you delete your account, your takes are deleted; your published replies, contests and rebuttals stay in other people's threads, but their text is deleted and they're shown as "Deleted". Seals stay as counts. See the Privacy Policy for details.
5. Community guidelines
Opinable is for light, friendly disagreement. When you post:
- Keep it light. Food, travel, technology, films, series, games, sports, music, habits and everyday life. Politics, wars, tragedies, and highly sensitive or polarising topics are out of scope and won't be published.
- Argue with the idea, not the person. No personal attacks, insults, mockery of someone's identity, threats or harassment, whether against the person you're debating or anyone else. Strong language about a thing is fine ("this pizza is damn good"); aimed at a person, it isn't.
- No hate. No hate speech, discrimination, sexual content or glorification of violence.
- Respect privacy. Don't post personal details about anyone, such as full names of private people, phone numbers or addresses.
- Be yourself. Don't impersonate other people or mislead others about who you are.
- No spam. No advertising, links for promotion, repeated posts or coordinated campaigns.
- Keep it legal. No illegal content and nothing that infringes someone else's rights.
6. Reporting and moderation
Opinable is a hosting service under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). Every take, reply, contest and rebuttal is checked automatically before it's published, against these guidelines and for harmful content (see the Privacy Policy for how). The check either publishes the text, doesn't publish it and tells you why, or holds it until a person has read it. A text that's blocked never uses up your turn: you can write the reply, contest or rebuttal again, and a blocked take gives you your daily take back.
You can report a published text you think breaks these terms or the law:
- in the app, using Report on the take, reply, contest or rebuttal; or
- by email to hello@opinable.app. Please say where the content is, why you think it's illegal or breaks the rules, and, unless the law allows otherwise, your name and email.
Reports are reviewed by a person. We may keep content, remove it, or suspend or close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms. We decide fairly and without bias, taking into account everyone's rights, including freedom of expression. A removed text is replaced by a note saying it was removed.
When we don't publish or remove your content, or restrict your account, we'll tell you why, except for spam or where the law doesn't allow it. If you disagree with a decision, including one made by the automatic check, or with our answer to your report, write to us at the email above within six months and a person will look at it again. You can also go to court or, where available, an out-of-court dispute settlement body certified under the DSA.
Authorities and users can contact us about the DSA at the same email address, in English or Portuguese.
7. Child safety
Opinable has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE). This includes child sexual abuse material (CSAM), any sexualisation of minors, grooming, and any attempt to contact, solicit or exploit a minor for sexual purposes.
- Opinable is only for people aged 16 and over. If we learn that an account belongs to someone younger, we delete it.
- The automatic check stops sexual content involving minors, and grooming or soliciting a minor (for example asking someone's age to approach them, asking a minor for photos or a meeting, or moving a conversation with a minor off Opinable), before anything is published, and sends it to a person on our team. When it detects it, the account can't post anything for 24 hours while we review it, and we keep the original text as evidence, even if the account is deleted.
- When we confirm a violation, we remove the content and disable the account responsible. The same applies to any CSAE content that gets through and that we learn about later.
- We report child sexual abuse material to the competent authorities (in Portugal, the Polícia Judiciária) and, where appropriate, to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and we keep what the law requires us to keep.
- Report it in the app with Report and the Child safety reason (we review these reports before all others), or by email to hello@opinable.app with "Child safety" in the subject. If a child is in danger right now, contact your local emergency services.
Our contact for child safety is hello@opinable.app.
8. Translations
Texts on Opinable are translated automatically by AI, so people can read and reply in their own language. Translations can miss slang, humour or nuance, or get things wrong. The original is always one tap away ("See original"), and it's the original that counts, including for moderation.
9. The service
- Opinable is free. We may change, add or remove features, or stop the service, and will give reasonable notice before stopping it.
- Takes and replies are personal opinions of the people who post them, not ours. We don't check them for accuracy.
- Don't misuse Opinable: don't try to break or overload it, get around its limits or security, access other people's accounts, or collect data from it with automated tools.
- The Opinable name, logo, app and design belong to us. Other content belongs to the people who posted it.
10. Liability
We work to keep Opinable available, but it's provided free and "as is", without guarantees that it will always be available or error-free. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for content posted by other people, for decisions you make based on it, or for indirect losses.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for intent or gross negligence, or your rights as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using Opinable and delete your account at any time in the app (Profile → Settings → Delete account). We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, and will tell you why, as described in Reporting and moderation.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by Portuguese law. If you live in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your country, and can bring a claim in the courts where you live. We'd like to solve any problem with you directly first: write to us.
Consumers can also turn to an alternative dispute resolution entity; a list is available at www.consumidor.gov.pt.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when Opinable gets new features. We'll change the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app before they apply. If you don't agree, you can delete your account.
